2014 was a big year for social media, and it looks like 2015 might be much of the same. So we thought we’d start 2015 with a brief reflection of 2014, and what it meant for social media. We’ve got analysis on the big 4 social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, YouTube), as well as a few others, including Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Snapchat.

Facebook

Facebook has 1.28 billion monthly active users, making it the most popular network out there. Also:

  • It has 1.01 billion mobile monthly active users
  • 72% of online adults visit Facebook at least once a month
  • The number of Facebook users in India alone is over 100 million
  • There are more than 50 million Facebook pages
  • The most common reason to unlike a Facebook page is uninteresting posts
  • 75% of engagement on a post happens in the first 5 hours

Google Plus

Google Plus has 540 million monthly active users, and a total of 1.6 billion users. Also:

  • The average time spent on Google Plus is just 7 minutes per month
  • 22% of online adults visit Google Plus once a month
  • 53% of interaction between a Google Plus user and a brand is positive.

 

Twitter

Twitter has 255 million monthly active users, and a total of 1 billion users. Also:

  • 500 million Tweets are sent every day
  • 78% of Twitter’s active users are on mobile
  • 44% of users have never sent a Tweet, and are considered inactive
  • 391 million Twitter accounts have no followers
  • 46% of Twitter users tweet at least once every day.

 

Instagram

Instagram has 200 million monthly active users. Also:

  • More than 20 billion photos have been shared on Instagram to date
  • 23% of teens consider Instagram as their favourite social network
  • 50 million users signed up to Instagram in the last 6 months of 2014
  • Thailand alone has 1.5 million Instagram users
LinkedIn

LinkedIn has 187 million monthly active users, and a total of 300 million users. Also:

  • More than 2 users sign-up for LinkedIn every second
  • There are over 39 million students and graduates on LinkedIn
  • LinkedIn reaches a total of 200 countries
  • 41% of LinkedIn visits are via mobile
  • 44,000 is the average number of daily LinkedIn mobile job applications

 

Pinterest

Pinterest has 40 million monthly active users, and a total of 70 million users. Also:

  • 80% of Pinterest users are female
  • 158 is the average number of pins from female users
  • 84% of women and 50% of men on Pinterest stay active
  • 92% of Pinterest pins are done by women
  • 23% of Pinterest users use it at least once every day

 

Snapchat

Snapchat has 30 million monthly active users, and a total of 60 million users. Also:

  • 400 million Snapchats are sent every day
  • 70% of Snapchat users are female
  • 12% of Snapchats are shared with multiple recipients
  • 5% of selfies shared on social media are from Snapchat
  • 50% of Norway’s smartphone users use Snapchat

 

YouTube

YouTube has more than 1 billion users. Also:

  • 6 billion hours of video is watched on YouTube every month
  • 100 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • 40% of YouTube traffic comes from Mobile
  • 1 billion is the average YouTube mobile videos viewed every day
